Privacy Policy for MH Renal & Allergy Assist
Last Updated: April 13, 2025
This Privacy Policy explains how the MH Renal & Allergy Assist Chrome extension ("the Extension") collects, uses, and protects information when you use our Extension. We are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring transparency about our data practices. By installing and using the Extension, you agree to the terms outlined in this Privacy Policy.
1. Information We Collect
The MH Renal & Allergy Assist Extension is designed to display a floating pane with Creatinine, GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate), and allergy information within the Practice Fusion website. The Extension operates locally on your device and interacts with the Practice Fusion web interface to extract and display relevant data. Below is an overview of the information we collect:
a. Data Accessed on Practice Fusion
- Lab Values and Allergies: The Extension accesses and displays lab values (Creatinine and GFR) and allergy information directly from the Practice Fusion website when you are on an encounter page or interacting with medication search inputs. This data is extracted from the webpage's DOM (Document Object Model) and displayed in a floating panel for your convenience.
- Patient Name: The Extension may display the patient name as shown on the Practice Fusion interface to provide context for the lab values.
b. Data Stored Locally
- Extension Settings: The Extension stores a single setting locally on your device using Chrome's chrome.storage.sync API to remember your preferred mode ("Always-On" or "Medication Search Mode"). This setting is not associated with any personally identifiable information.
- Cached Data: To improve performance, the Extension temporarily caches lab values, patient names, and allergy information locally in memory during your browser session. This cache is reset when you navigate to a new page or close the browser tab, and no data is persisted beyond the session unless explicitly required for functionality (e.g., mode settings).
c. No Personal Data Collection
- The Extension does not collect, store, or transmit any personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, email addresses, or other personal details outside of the local browser environment.
- The Extension does not access or process data beyond what is visible on the Practice Fusion website in your current session.
2. How We Use Your Information
The information accessed or stored by the Extension is used solely to provide the core functionality of displaying lab values and allergy information within Practice Fusion. Specifically:
- Displaying Lab Values and Allergies: Lab values (Creatinine and GFR) and allergy information are extracted from Practice Fusion pages and displayed in a floating panel to assist healthcare providers in viewing relevant data efficiently.
- Highlighting Allergies: The Extension applies visual overlays to allergy information on Practice Fusion to make it more prominent.
- Mode Switching: The locally stored mode setting ("Always-On" or "Medication Search Mode") determines when the floating panel is displayed (e.g., always visible or only when focusing on medication search inputs).
- Performance Optimization: Temporary caching of data (e.g., lab values, patient names, allergies) reduces the need for repeated DOM queries, improving the Extension's responsiveness.
No data is used for purposes beyond the Extension's intended functionality, such as analytics, advertising, or sharing with third parties.
3. Data Sharing and Disclosure
The MH Renal & Allergy Assist Extension does not share, transmit, or disclose any data to third parties. All processing occurs locally within your browser, and no data is sent to external servers or services. The Extension does not integrate with any third-party APIs or services that would involve data sharing.
4. Data Storage and Security
- Local Processing: All data processing (e.g., extracting lab values, displaying allergies) happens within your browser. No data is stored on external servers.
- Temporary Caching: Lab values, patient names, and allergy information are cached in memory only for the duration of your browser session or until you navigate to a new page. This cache is cleared automatically when the page changes or the browser tab is closed.
- Mode Settings: The mode preference ("Always-On" or "Medication Search Mode") is stored securely using Chrome's chrome.storage.sync API, which is encrypted and accessible only to the Extension.
- Security Measures: We use standard web development practices to ensure the Extension operates securely within the Chrome browser environment. The Extension requests only the minimum permissions necessary (activeTab and storage) to function, reducing potential risks.
5. Permissions Used by the Extension
The Extension requires the following permissions, as declared in its manifest.json:
- activeTab: Allows the Extension to access the content of the active tab on Practice Fusion websites (*://*.practicefusion.com/*) to extract and display lab values and allergy information.
- storage: Enables the Extension to save your mode preference ("Always-On" or "Medication Search Mode") locally, so it persists across browser sessions.
These permissions are used solely to provide the Extension's core functionality and are not used to access unrelated data or websites.
6. Third-Party Services
The Extension does not use any third-party services, APIs, or libraries that collect or process user data. The only external interaction occurs when you use the search input in the floating panel to open a new tab on Epocrates (https://www.epocrates.com), but no data is sent to Epocrates by the Extension itself—any search is initiated by your direct input in the browser.
7. Compliance with Practice Fusion
The Extension is designed to work within the Practice Fusion web interface, respecting its structure and data presentation. Users are responsible for ensuring that their use of the Extension complies with Practice Fusion’s terms of service and any applicable healthcare regulations, such as HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), if used in a professional medical context.
8. User Rights and Control
You have full control over the Extension’s operation:
- Uninstalling the Extension: You can remove the Extension at any time through Chrome’s Extensions settings (chrome://extensions/). Uninstalling the Extension deletes all locally stored data, including the mode setting.
- Mode Switching: You can toggle between "Always-On" and "Medication Search Mode" via the Extension’s popup interface, controlling when the floating panel appears.
- No Account Required: The Extension does not require you to create an account or provide personal information to use it.
9. Children’s Privacy
The MH Renal & Allergy Assist Extension is intended for use by healthcare professionals and is not directed at individuals under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect or process personal information from children.
10. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in the Extension’s functionality or legal requirements. The updated policy will be posted here with a revised "Last Updated" date. If significant changes are made, we will notify users through the Chrome Web Store update process. We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
