A complete blood count (CBC) is one of the most common blood tests, and for good reason. It provides your Maniya Health provider with a comprehensive view of your health by measuring various components of your blood.
We use CBC results to help detect illness, monitor ongoing conditions, and guide your personalized care — and all of it starts with on-site lab work in our Hamilton, Hopewell, or Robbinsville, New Jersey, office.
Take a moment as our team explains what a CBC measures and what it can reveal about your health.
A CBC breaks down your blood into three main components—red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets—giving our team insight into how well your body is functioning.
Your red blood cells carry oxygen through your body. A CBC looks at:
We can also take a look at several values — MCV, MCH, MCHC, and RDW – that describe the size, shape, and hemoglobin content of your red blood cells. These values help detect anemia or nutrient deficiencies.
Platelets help your blood clot properly. A CBC will show your platelet count, which is the total number of platelets in your blood.
We can also examine your mean platelet volume (MPV). This indicates the average size of your platelets, which may suggest certain conditions if they are too high or too low. For example, anemia, certain cancers, infections, and inflammatory conditions can cause thrombocytosis (high platelets).
White blood cells (WBCs) protect your body from infections. A CBC can check the total count of all types of white blood cells.
Your report may also categorize each type of white blood cell, e.g., the number of neutrophils, monocytes, etc. Knowing the count of specific types of white blood cells can reveal more information about your health. For example, if you have fewer than 2,500 neutrophils per microliter of blood, you may have neutropenia.
Together, these numbers help your provider get a full picture of your health, from oxygen levels and immune response to potential deficiencies or infections.
Your CBC results can uncover a wide range of health conditions, such as:
Even if you’re feeling well, a CBC can detect early signs of illness before symptoms appear.
At Maniya Health, we use CBC results as part of a holistic approach to primary care. We combine lab data with lifestyle assessments to give you the clearest picture of your health and wellness.
Regular CBC testing helps your care team catch small changes in your health over time. For example, gradual decreases in red blood cells could indicate a hidden nutrient deficiency, while consistent elevations in white blood cells could signal chronic inflammation or an undiagnosed infection.
If it’s been a while since your last bloodwork—or if you’ve been feeling fatigued, dizzy, or under the weather—a simple CBC can provide the insight you need.
