Labs Q & A

What are labs?

Labs, or laboratory tests, analyze a sample of your blood or another bodily fluid to gain insights into your health. At Maniya Health, the team uses labs to diagnose underlying health problems, monitor the success of certain treatments, and gauge your well-being over time.

It’s important to undergo lab testing annually, even if you feel healthy. Many chronic conditions, like high cholesterol and Type 2 diabetes, don’t present obvious symptoms. As a result, you might be at risk but not realize it.

What are common types of labs?

The team at Maniya Health offers various labs, including:

Complete blood count (CBC)

A CBC analyzes the number of specific cells in your blood, including white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. This type of lab test can assess your general health and pinpoint the cause of underlying symptoms like bruising, fatigue, or weakness.

Basic metabolic panel

A basic metabolic panel analyzes the number of certain nutrients in your blood, like sodium, potassium, calcium, and chloride. For the most accurate results, it’s recommended you fast for at least 12 hours before the test.

Lipid panel

A lipid panel measures the number of fats, including lipids and triglycerides, in your blood. This lab helps your Maniya Health provider determine your risk of heart disease.

Glycated hemoglobin (A1C)

A glycated hemoglobin or A1C test measures your average blood sugar over the course of the last few months. If you receive two separate tests with a reading of 6.5% or higher, it means you have diabetes.

Thyroid-stimulating hormone

A thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test is a lab that assesses the function of your thyroid, a gland at the base of your neck. If your thyroid underproduces or overproduces hormones, you might have a thyroid disorder.

Urinalysis

Urinalysis analyzes a sample of your urine. It’s a quick and effective way to check for underlying health problems. It’s also for monitoring kidney disease and liver disease or can diagnose a urinary tract infection.

What types of labs might benefit me?

The type of labs that most benefit you depends on various factors, including your age, medical history, and lifestyle. Following a review of your medical history and a physical exam, the team at Maniya Health can make recommendations for labs that align with your needs.
